How to pick an engineering college

Many aspirants confused as to which one to pick. If you are one of those, begin with this checklist…

Affiliation and Approval

The first thing to check is whether an institute is affiliated to the Rajasthan Technical University and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education. Besides, some colleges are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation.
When applying for a job, accreditation plays a key role.

Infrastructure

World-class infrastructure helps students learn with the latest technology and stay updated on current developments in their fields.
However, a well-designed campus does not necessarily mean that it is international in the real sense. It should have appropriate resources and facilities such as computers, mechanical labs, laboratories, workshops, seminar halls, sports ground, etc. Before admission, make sure that the college has the required infrastructure for the sanctioned intake.

Faculty

A college’s strength depends on its faculty the principal, heads of departments, professors, lecturers and guest teachers. The qualification, experience and research work demonstrate the staff’s capability. Scrutinize the student-teacher ratio as well.

Placements

Do not blindly believe the authorities’ claims about placements verify them. Vet the placement record thoroughly.
How many students find jobs in the final year or after completing their studies? Which national and multinational companies recruit students from the college and which branches draw the maximum number of jobs?
What are the maximum and average pay packages these companies offer to the students? Investigate the crucial details properly.

Facilities

This is another critical factor that can make or mar your learning experience. Some of the facilities to consider include the library, databases, internet connectivity, hostels, transportation, dispensary and canteen.

Exam Result

Examination results reflect a college’s academic standard. If a large number of its students have performed poorly, that college is probably not good for you.

Parallel Activities

Extra-curricular activities boost confidence and hone skills.
While zeroing in on a college, you must ascertain how many and which types of activities take place on campus (or even outside). Some of these activities may include skill development programme, workshops, club events, and sports, among others.

Collaborations

Industrial and academic collaborations provide national as well as global exposure to students. Educational exchange programme with reputable foreign universities and tie-ups with well-known companies play a major role in grooming learners. Find out about the institute’s partnerships for research projects, live projects and academic exchange programme with other institutions.

Project Work

Projects enable students to showcase their innovative skills. Generally, engineering students make projects for marks in the final year of their BTech (according to the syllabus), but a few colleges have compulsory non-syllabus projects from the first year. Do not just look for the requirement of a project in the curriculum but know the details. What kind of innovative projects do students need to complete? How many projects have won national and international prizes?

Brand Image

Some colleges enjoy great brand recall, due to their performance in academics, placements, state-of-art infrastructure and other features. Yet, crosscheck the information through ranking agencies, students and alumni.
