Most Common Interview Fears

The 11 most common fears that people have voiced to me about interviewing are contained in the following checklist.

  • I fear they will ask me a question I don’t know the answer to.
  • I’m afraid I’ll sound like I’m bragging.
  • Do I have to say I was fired from my last job? Can they find out?
  • Everyone says I am under/overqualified. What should I do?
  • Do I have to submit to drug testing, credit checks, or personality tests?
  • What should I do if an interviewer asks me an intrusive or illegal question?
  • I don’t know what to do with my hands during an interview.
  • I fear I will just “freeze up” in the interview.
  • I had to answer technical questions. They were easy, and I knew I had answered them right. The interviewer said I answered them wrong.
  • Do I have to reveal how much money I made at my last job? How and when should I bring up the issue of salary?
  • How do I explain that I was laid off?
