Avoid Cold Drinks, Use Desi Summer Coolers

These easy-to-make coolers will make the hot summer days slightly bearable. It’s not just ice, but freshness in the ingredients that will quench your thirst and also keep you rejuvenated.

Kokum sharbat

A popular Maharashtrian welcome drink, this cooler is made by mixing kokum pulp and water, and roasted cumin powder to add some spice. Rich in Vitamin C, it also prevents skin rashes and allergies during summer.

Jaljeera

A simple, yet refreshing drink made by mixing cumin (jeera) powder in ice-cold water has amazing cooling properties. Tangy and spicy in taste, mixed with spices like pepper powder, fennel seeds or amchoor (dry mango powder), it is considered to be good for digestion.

Buttermilk

This simple beaten yogurt drink, mixed with slight salt, is good for the season. Topped with chaat masala and chopped coriander leaves, the spicy version of this drink is quite popular in the city.

Aam panna

Made from fresh raw mango that are abundant this season, Aam Panna is very refreshing and has heat-resistant properties. It is sour and sweet in taste, depending on the mangoes that you use.

Shikanji

This old-style lemonade is the easiest and most dependable cooler this season. It is made by squeezing fresh lemon juice, and mixing it with crushed ginger, mint leaves, sugar and salt, that adds to its freshness.
